On Thursday, November 21, 2024, the University of Ferrara became a center for innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship as it hosted the COLOURS International Student Innovation Lab. This unique event brought together students, professionals, and experts to address a pressing regional issue: the alarming spread of the invasive blue crab.

The blue crab, an invasive species in Ferrara’s marine ecosystems, has caused significant disruption. Its unchecked spread has harmed the local marine environment, threatening the economy and tourism. A key focus of the event was raising awareness of how climate change amplifies this issue. In Ferrara, clam production—a vital part of the local economy— plummeted from 15,000 tonnes to 3,000 tonnes in 2021, highlighting the urgency of finding solutions to this challenge and addressing its root causes.

The Mayor of Goro and representatives from local businesses opened the event by emphasizing the critical need for innovative, sustainable solutions. They highlighted the importance of understanding how blue crabs thrive in freshwater and the need to mitigate the impacts of climate change, which has been identified as a primary driver of the crisis.

At the heart of the event was a hybrid workshop utilizing the Imagine Creative Thinking technique, which encouraged collaborative brainstorming to generate innovative ideas. Students from Italy and other countries joined forces to explore ways to mitigate the blue crab’s impact. Guided by experts and professionals, the participants engaged in vibrant discussions, offering fresh perspectives and bold solutions.

Proposals ranged from conducting further research to understand the disruption caused by blue crabs to creating sustainable market strategies that could transform this invasive species into an economic opportunity. The workshop fostered a spirit of creativity and collaboration, with participants encouraged to think outside conventional approaches.

The event also underscored the dedication of the COLOURS inter-university alliance to fostering student growth and engagement. Beyond this one-day lab, COLOURS is committed to organizing more challenge-based activities, including masterclasses, workshops, and micro-credential courses. These initiatives aim to enhance students’ knowledge and soft skills, equipping them to tackle complex, real-world problems effectively.

For COLOURS, putting students at the center is more than a principle—it’s a mission. The alliance deeply values student input, ensuring their ideas play a central role in every project. This commitment was evident throughout the day, as student voices shaped discussions and potential strategies for addressing the blue crab crisis.

The CoLab successfully raised awareness about climate change’s role in Ferrara’s marine ecosystem challenges. It also provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and creative problem-solving. Participants left with new insights, skills, and a certificate of participation, marking their contribution to addressing a critical environmental issue.
